Even Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Games, MMORPGs, are beginning to follow suit, although one can assume that the behemoth that is Blizzard's World of Warcraft will always remain a subscription-based game. 
Still, recently Lord of the Rings Online revoked its subscription fee policy, a move that surprised certain individuals, including me. 
Guild Wars was one of the first MMORPGs that did not require a subscription fee to play, but it was an episodic one that required players to purchase all of the "episodes" for the full gaming experience. Evony is one of the best free browser games.
Many people enjoyed Guild Wars because of its graphical quality, and its lack of subscription fees. There were disputes about its merit due to its relatively low level cap, and the skill system, but it was still notable as a free-to-play MMORPG. The only purchase required was that of the game itself.
Still, Lord of the Rings Online has not gone entirely free. Lord of the Rings Online maintains some content that requires purchase with real money. 
Like World of Warcraft, which often sells vanity pets and mounts for real life money, Lord of the Rings Online does similar things, although it takes the subscription fee out of the equation. 
Like Guild Wars, individuals are still required to purchase Lord of the Rings Online and all of its expansions to experience the full game.
Free-to-play games are an interesting beast. Obviously the problem in and of itself is the daunting task of maintaining a large online game, moderating the players, and managing the systems themselves. 
Free-to-play games were a risk taken, but with Puzzle Pirates' rather surprising success and one of the first major ventures into the realm of free-to-play dedicated games that were not Flash-based games played in a browser, the business model's success has been proven. 
With major companies like getting involved on this new scheme, one can only assume that there is possibly a greater potential to make money, and the ability to keep consumers happy, with this new model.
Only time will tell if the business model is sustainable. 
As an individual with limited knowledge of economy, I can make no predictions, other than simply the common-sense assumption that people do not like the idea of being told to part with their money.

Allods Online est un jeu de r?le massivement multijoueurs sans abonnement basé sur la série Allods (Free MMORPG), plus connue sous le nom de Rage of Mages en occident.

Initialement dévoilé par le portail gPotato sous le nom du ? Project Shards ?, Allods Online était alors présenté comme un MMORPG ? de très grande envergure ? dont la conception a été confiée à un studio de développement occidental ? connu ? (mais dont le nom n'était pas encore dévoilé) et ayant signé ? une longue liste de jeux solo à succès ?...

En développement depuis 2007 au sein du studio coréen XL Games (fondé par Song Jae Kyung - Jake Song, en occident - l’un des inspirateurs du premier opus de Lineage, alors chez NCsoft), ArcheAge renvoie le joueur aux origines d’un monde fantastique... Après un cataclysme ayant ravagé l’univers du jeu, les survivants issus de huits grands peuples (parmi lesquels des humains, des elfes ou des nains, en plus de cinq peuplades originales) tentent de refonder une civilisation...

Reposant sur le CryEngine 2, ArcheAge entend plonger le joueur au coeur d’une histoire du monde de grande envergure, que le joueur fera évoluer au gré de ses actions. Les récits et arcs scénaristiques devraient jouer un r?le de poids dans le gameplay d'ArcheAge.

4 Développé par Ndoors Interactive, Atlantica Online se distingue des autres MMORPG par ses combats au tour par tour et son gameplay stratégique, de gestion de cités, voire de pays entiers.

5 Inspiré de la série télévisée du même nom, Battlestar Galactica Online entend plonger le joueur dans l'espace, au coeur de la lutte opposant les derniers survivants de l'humanité aux cylons, des robots humano?des, tout en exploitant le mysticisme propre à la série.

Dans (free browser games ) Battlestar Galactica Online, le joueur choisit son camp (entre humains et cylons) et prend les commandes d'un vaisseau pour prendre part à la guerre spatiale pour la survie de l'humanité. Ce Web MMO (qui repose le moteur 3D Unity, permettant de générer des univers 3D dans un simple navigateur Web) s'appuie sur un gameplay d'action. Le joueur collectionne les vaisseaux parmi ceux découverts dans la série et les utilise pour affronter la faction adverse ou contribuer à la survie de clan en collectant des ressources dans l'espace (eau, métaux, etc. sur les astéro?des du jeu).

Battlestar Galactica Online promet un gameplay à la fois PvE et PvP, entend multiplier les quêtes et devrait intégrer quelques uns des personnages célèbres de la série, même si le jeu se détache de la trame scénaristique des épisodes diffusées à la télévision américaine.



6Dragon Nest est présenté comme un Action MMORPG, axé sur le PvE sous forme de Donjon, au contenu se voulant riche et accessible. Le jeu promet de combats dynamiques au cours desquels il ne suffira pas de ? cliquer et d'attendre ?. Dragon Nest promet également des territoires évolutifs (les monstres y apparaissent de fa?on aléatoires), des guerres de guildes, ou encore la possibilité de se changer en dragons pour les personnages les plus puissants. 


7 Présenté comme un Web MMO de stratégie / gestion, Cultures Online (qui s'inspire du jeu Cultures lancé dans les années 90) place le joueur à la tête d'un petit village viking à faire prospérer, culturellement et militairement. Le jeu invite à recruter jusqu'à huit héros qui exploreront l'Europe du Nord (et au-delà), collecteront des matières premières, mèneront des recherches technologiques (posant les bases d'un artisanat) ou lanceront des expéditions dans de lointaines contrées.

Dans Cultures Online, les joueurs peuvent se regrouper en guilde sur une même ?le ou s'affronter dans le cadre d'un gameplay PvP (pillage des ressources des autres joueurs, conquêtes de territoires, etc.).


8 Dans les cartons de Sony Online Entertainment, ? DC Universe Online ? est largement inspiré des licences du même nom et plongera le joueur au c?ur de l'univers de Super Héros des éditions DC Comics (Batman, Wonder Woman, etc.), l'un des principaux éditeurs de Comics de langue anglaise.

Destiné aux PC et à la console de nouvelle génération de Sony, la PlayStation 3, DC Universe Online pourra compter sur le talent du dessinateur Jim Lee (l'un des coauteurs notamment de Batman et Robin chez DC Comics) pour garantir ? l'authenticité de l'univers des Comics originaux ?.
